Chapter 29

Ezra studied the worm seated before him in disgust.

“I told the FBI everything,” Agent Derek Dent begged. “Chapel fooled so many of us…” The dark-skinned man had been stripped of his suit jacket, sweat staining his white dress shirt. But Ezra didn’t know if this was just the disguise Dent was trapped in with that bronze nullifier restraint around his neck. Dent was a metamorph, not the most common type of supers.

Ten years of service down the drain, Ezra mused.

At his right, the slender Mr. White stood rooted to the floor, dark leonine hair combed back, wearing the shit out of his ebony suit. His face was a place where warm or fuzzy went to die.

On Ezra’s left stood Ms. Gold in a dark grey suit, as tall as Ezra, a long braid draped over one shoulder. The half-smile on her face never reached her stare.

These telepaths had been vetted by Mr. Blue from various psionic assets used for the OSA's revamped PsiOps division.

Under dim lights in a drab holding cell, Dent blubbered more incoherent apologies.

Dent was one of many traitors arrested for fulsomely supporting Rod Chapel after his true nature got exposed.

Ezra cut off his babbling with a hand chop. “I’m sure you believe you, Agent Dent,” he remarked. “But you only returned a month after what remained of Monarch went dark.” A smile tugged at Ezra’s lips. “Were you hoping to be Chapel's mole, wherever he is?”

“I…don’t…” Dent began again. “I don’t know where Chapel—”

“You’ve seen the news,” Ezra interrupted like he hadn’t spoken. The director circled his prey. “What happened to the members of Congress and Executive Branch personnel getting arrested?” He stopped behind Dent. “And the former OSA agents who kept supporting Noah Huntley?”

Dent’s jaw fell open, but nothing came out.

Ezra gave a satisfied nod. “The names of any traitors who supported Huntley’s coup will get dragged through the mud,” he said. “Along with their friends and families—”

“Give me a chance!” Dent blurted out and cupped his hands. “I have daughters! My wife…I’ll be loyal—”

“QUIET,” Ezra barked, sick of his voice.

Dent’s mouth snapped shut.

Ezra rounded the chair so they were facing and glanced at Mr. White.

He’s not acting, White replied. Dent’s ready to piss himself.

Ezra stifled a smirk. Fear was a useful tool during interrogations.

“The only reason you aren’t in prison is because of your metamorphic powers,” he admitted. “You can mimic almost any person you target, correct?”

Dent’s fear was so deep, he took several moments to reply. “Yes… I’ll do anything to make this right.”

Got him, Ezra crowed. “There is a way forward working for the OSA,” he declared. “But measures will be taken so you never betray your government again.”

Dent’s eyes narrowed. “Measures?” he repeated.

Ezra gestured at his pet telepaths. “Mr. White and Ms. Gold will provide a proper…reeducation.”

Dent flattened against his seat. “You’re lobotomizing me?” he yelped.

“Nothing as extensive,” Ezra replied in put-on distaste. “You won’t even remember tonight. So…duty or prison?”

Dent gaped at the menacing telepaths, conflict radiating off his body language.
